| Abstract | This workshop presents the significance of advanced test rigs (hardware) and validation platforms (software) to effectively validate control theory and contributing to a more real life system development. Using case studies from Japan and elsewhere, the presenters will introduce up to date controls theory validation techniques for a range of advanced control research applications. The importance of finding the real life problem to be solved and the educational importance will also ;be highlighted. Specific topics include robust control, adaptive control, aerospace applications, and biomedical robotics applications. | ||

List of Presenters and short bios
| Dr. Takami is a Professor of System Creation Engineering at Nanzan University, Japan. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Physics from Kyoto University. Dr. Takamifs specialization is controls engineering, system engineering and reliability engineering. Dr. Takami has published 46 academic articles in journals and international conference papers, received 3 awards of which 2 are from SICE and has conducted 30 presentations at conferences |
| Dr. Lee is an Adjunct Professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Automation and Control) from the University of Waterloo. He is also a Chief Education Officer at Quanser. Dr. Leefs specialization is in generalized system-level methodologies for physical system modeling and control. In the past, he has held senior positions with the mathematical software company Maplesoft, a subsidiary of Cybernet Systems, Japan. He also holds an adjunct appointment with Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico. |
| Taiki Hoshi is an Academic Field Engineer at National Instruments Japan. He has earned his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland. He is also a visiting lecturer at Osaka University starting the academic year of 2013. |
Workshop Goals
To provide an overview of the latest techniques and the importance of applying
various test rigs and validating platforms for effective validation and
testing of control theory that relate to real life problems.
Workshop Content and Major Topics
- General Introduction (Dr. Lee/Taiki)
- Research Case Studies at Nanzan University (Dr. Takami)
- Robust Control on Tower Crane Development and implementation of robust control on a bench top tower crane system to stabilize the payload. The dynamic control algorithm accommodates the oscillation of the payload at different frequencies depending on cable length.
- Robust Control on Aerospace Devices Case study of the three-degree of freedom helicopter test rig.
- Adaptive Control on Aerospace Devices Design and implementation of an adaptive control on a two-degree of freedom helicopter test rig.
- Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Design and implementation of a feedback control on a flexible arm. The feedback gains are determined by the particle swarm optimization.
- Global Case Studies (Dr. Lee)
- "Iron Bird". University of Toronto's Systems Control Group. Aircraft dynamics are modeled and simulated on a real-time rapid control prototyping software. This sets the position of a three-degree of freedom gyroscope platform. An IMU is mounted on the gyroscope system and estimates the position, which drives a visualization of a quad-rotor aircraft.
- Rehabilitation Robotics. University of Alberta's Telerobotic and Biorobotic Systems Group. Ageing populations are causing a growing demand for rehabilitation services following stroke, joint injury, and other health complications resulting in motor impairment. Rehabilitation robotics are a potential solution to enable patients' motor performance to improve further and faster than conventional physiotherapy.
- 2 DOF Gantry and Safety Harness. Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI). Falls account for the majority of fractures in the elderly and are the leading cause of death due to injury. Developing new stair-climbing aids based on how current stair and handrail design affects gait, posture, and incidence of falls can reduce the changes of falling.
- Applications in Education (Dr. Lee)
- Examples of immersive visualization techniques to connect control experiments to real world applications. The result is an HIL application that offers a stronger connection between the theoretical aspects and applications such as automotive vehicle dynamics and flight control.
